RETAINING WALLS

QUESTIONS THAT YOU CONSIDER BEFORE HIRING A RETAINING WALL CONTRACTOR

  1. Does the contractor have Liability and Workman’s Compensation Insurance? Ask for a copy.
  2. Will the contractor put grid in the wall if it is 3 foot tall or higher?
  3. What kind of grid will they use? If they are experienced, they will know.
  4. What type of compaction equipment will the contractor use?
  5. They should be using equipment of some sort, like a plate compactor, a jumping jack, a sheepsfoot compactor)
  6. Grid and compaction are key. If they aren’t planning to use them or don’t know how to correctly install them, the wall will likely fall down. We see walls that were recently built but have failed because the contractor did not know what they were doing.
  7. Will the contractor use rock behind the wall?
  8. If the answer is no or not much, do not hire them.
  9. Rock is essential to drainage.
  10. How will the contractor construct the footing?
  11. Should be 6-8” of Compacted Rock depending on soil conditions.
  12. Will an engineer drawing or permit be required?
  13. Each locale has different rules regarding permits – the contractor should be aware of the requirements and willing to meet them.

A retaining wall is a landscape feature that can serve many purposes for both commercial and residential properties. Some of these are:

  • Add stability to a sloped area
  • Increase the usability of the existing space
  • Enhance the curb appeal
  • Manage water runoff

Retaining walls are normally built out of either Landscape Timbers or Wall Block. Normally a timber wall will be less expensive that a block wall but has the disadvantage of rotting over time. A block wall properly built will stand until it is physically torn down.

All retaining wall built by B. Green Landscape Group start with an initial consultation to discuss the needs with the property owner. Once the needs are known, we will take the following steps:

  1. Create a detail proposal including details as to how many blocks and capstones or timbers will be needed to build the desired wall. Details will be provided as to the cost of each material, as well as machine time needed for excavating, grading & backfilling the wall as well as compacting the soil to the necessary compaction rate.
  2. If B. Green Landscape is chosen to build the wall, we will countersign the proposal with the customer to ensure that both parties are aware of the details of the job to be done.
  3. If the length or height of the wall requires an engineered drawing, we will work with our local consultant to obtain the necessary drawing, schedule the required inspections during the build and obtain the final completion letter upon finishing the wall.
  4. We will comply with all local building requirements and obtain building permits, as necessary.
  5. We will schedule the work with the customer to assure the least disruption to the property as possible.
  6. Our crew will build the wall and leave the property clean of all construction debris when we are done.

PATIOS

PATIOS ARE ESSENTIAL TO A RELAXING HOME LIFE.

Paver patios are durable and weather-resilient, which makes them an ideal low-maintenance material for patios and walkways. To properly construct a paver patio, we will do the following:

  • Graded the area to ensure that water flows away from any surrounding structures and properly drains from the surface of the patio.
  • Add four inches of gravel to ensure proper drainage
  • Add two inches of sand to set the pavers in – leveling the patio as we go.
  • The final step is to set the pavers with poly sweep to prevent excess movement.

Paver Patios can be added to retaining walls to add additional outdoor living space. Contact us today to schedule a meeting to discuss your free estimate on your project.

DRIVEWAYS + SIDEWALKS

DRIVEWAYS AND SIDEWALKS CAN BE EXPANDED AND / OR REBUILT USING CONCRETE.

All concrete is poured to tolerate normal wear and tear by passenger automobiles. Sidewalks can be also be replaced with pavers or flagstone if the property owner wants to change the look entirely. When the project is a replacement driveway or sidewalk from concrete, we will do the following:

  • Rip out the original concrete.
  • Grade the area.
  • Create new driveway / sidewalk forms on site.
  • Finally, the concrete is poured, finished, and allowed to cure for a set period prior to use.
